Superman/Supergirl: Maelstrom (Review)

Citizen's Grade: Sucked.

This mini-series collected in graphic novel form had promise. Superman, Supergirl, Darkseid, & a "evil" lover who wanted to be Darkseid's Queen. But after the first page it fizzled out to nothing.

Maelstrom is in love with Darkseid and hatches a plan to impress Darkseid and become his Queen. She travels to earth via "boomtube" to kill Superman and return his broken body to her love. She meets up with Supergirl instead and bests her in battle. Superman returns; however, and easily disposes of Maelstrom.

Maelstrom is imprisoned and tortured on Apokolips, and must fight in the arena to save her life. She doesn't lose heart though and gets Darkseid's permission to go back to Earth and try again.

Meanwhile; to help teach strategy to Supergirl, Superman takes her to a planet with a red sun so they can "rough" it without superpowers. Superman breaks his arm and Supergirl has to use survival skills to fix their ship, take care of Superman, and feed them. They then return to Earth.

After a battle with Maelstrom and some female furies from Apokolips they send them in the ship to the same planet. End of story.

Written by Jimmy Palmiotti & Justin Gray, with artwork by Phil Noto. I've never been a huge fan of Palmiotti, but this story was just a disaster. So many directions that they could have gone that would have spruced up this story. It wouldn't have mattered though....Noto's art is horrendous! Darkseid is short and stout in some frames, without any definition. Superman & Supergirl in their "no superpowers on an alien planet" uniforms are horrible as well. Superman looks like a 50 year-old who hasn't worked out in decades.....One of the worst Superman books I've read EVER!!!
